It is popularly known as the "Queen of Malanadu" or "Queen of Hill Areas". It is also believed to tbe blessed by the foot steps of St.Thomas during his visit to Nilackal which is onle about 50 KM from here.The Thottamon Church with its head aloft by the side of Punalur-Muvattupuzha State Highway is a sight to behold. The parish is under the jurisdication of the Malankara Metropolitan and the Catholicate of the East (Moran Mor Baselios Marthoma Didymos I) of the Orthodox Syrian Church in India. The parish comes under the reign of the Thumpamon Diocese - one of the oldest and largest diocese of the Malankara Church, which is under the Diocesan head HG Kuriakose Mar Clemis. The headquarters of Thumpamon Diocese is at Basil Aramana in Pathanamthita.With over more than 200 families, Thottamon St.Thomas Church (Thottamon Church as it is commonly known) is one of the fastest growing parishes in Ranni. Constructed in 1905, the Church has come on a long way and has not looked back since. The church is also a center of worship for all the communities living in Ranni. The Church is also one of the largest and oldest Orthodox Churches in Ranni District. An year long Centenary celebrations of the rejuvenated Church was carried out in January 2007.
The members of this church is believed to have come migrated from other places in the past. In the early days, before the construction of the church, the Malankara Orthodox Christians in Thottamon were members of St.Thomas Knanaya Valiyapally. Their forefathers were also buried in the cemetry of Ranni Valiyapally. During the course of time the Orthodox Christians, planned to construct a church of their own and they brought the needed land at the present site.
The Church has been a blessing to this small village and has been an ideal example of communal harmony that we can hardly see in other parts of India. The church has produced prominent priests, hailing from the most prominent familes of the Church.Thottamon Church is also having a group of blessed prayer groups, which is performing at its best in the various regions of Thottamon. It also has a strong wing of youths, which forms the backbone of the church activities.The youths of Thottamon Church also has an ideal prayer group known by the name "Mar Philexinos Memorial Youth League". This group has given their best for the Church activities. The Christmas carol of this church is also well known for its beautiful songs and the manner in which it is being conducted.
The Parish has also groomed 5 prominent priests during the course of its history. There are still some youngsters waiting in the wings to serve the Parish and the Church in the near future. The Church is a role model for the religious harmony it maintains with its neighbouring brothers and sisters.
